Artifact Garden at the Painted Pony Resort
In the back courtyard of the guest house at the Painted Pony Resort is a stone garden. Though it is not your average stone garden with tastefully arranged rive rock suitable for meditation, rather the stone garden is composed of fragments from over 2 dozen metates and grinding stones. There are also manos, hammer stones, scrapers, and other other artifacts collected off the property included in the stone artifact garden. Started by guests of the former owner the tradition has continued and fragments of metates are added to the garden as they are discovered by guests or while working on the property.

This is a very nice idea for the guests to look over and see some of the different items from the past are still around.

ReplyDeleteWe have a local friend who found so many broken metates in one place, he figured his land was the old dump!
ReplyDeleteI do not know why there are so many broken metates unless the living sites were seasonal and the locals broke everything when they left for the season. There are pieces of 2 dozen metates in garden and assuming 1 metate/household it suggests 24 households in this small area. Although this does not take into account time, 24 households suggests a higher population density in the valley than today.
